Pros

Sleek design

The SIM2 Max irons are the older twin of the SIM max irons. The look compared to the previous generation is almost identical. The SIM2 max irons have shades of blue and dark gray to compliment the chrome accents. The SIM2 Max is the sleekest game improvement iron on the market. The top line appears thinner than other game improvement irons.

Unreal sound and feel

On a personal level, I am a 5 handicap. I play Cobra Forged Tec irons which are a slight step above blades when it comes to size. At first look of the SIM2 Max irons they appeared larger, but not as large as I thought.

They are no larger than P790 irons for a higher skilled golfer who prefers a larger iron head. I began hitting balls in my simulator and realized how good they sounded and felt. These are not forged irons, but they feel like forged irons. The irons are soft.

The cap design from toe to heel dampens any unwanted vibrations if you do not hit the club center. This creates the sound and feel of a forged blade. The cap design also allows for more flexibility, giving the iron face a larger more forgiving sweet spot.

TaylorMade implemented an echo damping system. This provides a hollow construction surrounded by a polymer blend to decrease vibration. The SIM2 Max irons have the feel and sound of blades with more forgiveness.

After hitting about 50 golf balls, I began to question why I was playing a player’s iron. I was hitting the SIM2 Max iron on average 10 – 15 yards further per iron. Hitting the ball further is a quality in a golf club that almost any golfer wants.

Cons

This iron is not perfect. After testing these clubs and hitting the ball further than with my irons I recognized if you are a low handicap golfer, these are not for you. There is an important distinction between forged blades and game improvement irons like the SIM2 Max.

The golf ball does not spin off the face like a player’s iron, but rather the springy face created a higher ball speed with less rotation. How do the SIM2 Max irons perform?

As mentioned before, I had the ability to test out the SIM2 Max Irons. Below is some data from my findings. The chart below represents a comparison between the TaylorMade SIM2 Max iron and Cobra Forged Tec irons.

The set I had access to was 4 iron to a pitching wedge. The stock set is available with a 4 iron – 9, PW, AW, SW, LW.

Below you can see a shot comparison between a 5 iron, 7 iron, and pitching wedge from the SIM2 Max set and the Forged Tec set. I took 10 shots per club per iron and averaged all the data.

The distance I received from the SIM2 Max iron was longer than the Forged Tec. The ball speed was also faster due to the fast face in the SIM2 Max, but the spin rate was much higher in the Forged Tec iron set. It boils down to the player’s needs. Personally, I will stay with my forged tec irons as I desire a higher spin rate for workability with the club.

Additionally, I believe my game has gotten better playing with players irons. If I played with SIM2 Max irons daily I might get lazy by missing the center of the club face and not work on improving my ball striking. This certainly does not mean that the SIM2 Max irons won’t help your game, but if you are looking for loads of feedback on mishits, then the SIM2 is not for you.

The set I got to try out was my father’s, and he cleans his clubs after every single round. After one season, they are in worse condition than my Cobra Forged Tec irons which usually get more club chatter due to the soft metal. The toe-weighted critique is most likely due to the light feel of that shaft.
