Dennis Paterson: More Than 70 Years of Golf in Scotland

We’re privileged to introduce Dennis Paterson, a longtime lead moderator of our Seniors Who Golf community whose connection to the game spans more than seven decades. His story reaches far beyond scorecards: it is about competition, service at Cullen Links, golf trips across several countries, and friendships that have lasted as long as his love of the game.

From the rugged links of northeast Scotland to golf trips in Portugal, Ireland, Spain, Turkey and Florida, Dennis has collected plenty of stories. He has also given countless hours back as a club captain, greens convenor, committee member and volunteer before bringing that same spirit to Seniors Who Golf.

The tee boxes and handicaps may have changed, but competition, humor, friendship and the pleasure of being on the course remain at the heart of Dennis’s game.

A Lifetime Around the Game

Dennis first picked up golf at 10 in his hometown of Macduff. Set along the Moray Firth on Scotland’s northeast coast, Cullen Links became the center of both his playing life and decades of club service.

Dennis became an accomplished low-handicap competitor, but some of his most important contributions happened away from the scorecard. Across two stints, he served 12 years on the committee, including nine as Greens Convenor, along with terms as Vice Captain and Captain. His volunteering has ranged from bar duties to managing the club website.

Dennis has a simple philosophy about responsibility:

“I believe that when you accept a duty, you must give it your all to the best of your ability. That has got me through life.”

That willingness to pitch in matters at a small club. As Dennis explains:

“Cullen Links Golf Club is a very small club, often struggling to survive, but volunteering by many keeps our heads above water.”

The course is a par 63 measuring 4,644 yards, with 10 par 3s and just one par 5. The yardage can be deceptive: Cullen sits on two levels and includes demanding holes and memorable shots over rocky terrain.

A Few Rounds to Remember

Dennis’s best score came while playing off a 7 handicap, when he shot a scratch 63 with one birdie and one bogey on each nine. Earlier, during Cullen’s annual four-day championship, he played off 13 and shot 67 for a net 54, earning a three-stroke handicap cut.

He has also won the club’s low-handicap championship section and been crowned handicap club champion.

Golf in Northeast Scotland

Cullen’s location east of the Grampian Hills makes year-round golf more practical than many people might expect. The area averages about 23 inches of rain annually—“although it feels like more nowadays,” Dennis jokes—and receives relatively little snow. Severe frost can occasionally close the course.

Dennis now generally skips the coldest months:

“Now I seldom play from October through March due to arthritis in my hands making it too cold to get a proper grip on the clubs.”

Once the weather improves, he is right back out there.

Friendship Keeps Him Playing

Age has reduced Dennis’s distance and consistency, but neither defines what matters most to him now.

“Playing with a great group of friends is a great help, and the camaraderie drives me to keep playing at 81, but age takes its toll on distance and golf quality.”

Dennis carries an 18 World Handicap Index, plays from the forward tees and has a current playing handicap of 13—although he adds with typical humor that it is “looking like 18.” He plays Mondays with the Cullen Seniors Group and Wednesdays with his regular group of friends.

His priorities are straightforward:

“It is more about exercise and friendship — oh, and a coffee and shortbread.”

He plays forgiving Ping clubs—something he jokes “we all need as we age”—and prefers the Callaway Supersoft ball.

Golf Around the World

Dennis spent much of his career in horticulture. An unexpected early retirement after a road accident gave him more time for family, travel and golf. Trips with friends took him to Spain, Ireland, Turkey, Portugal and Florida, creating memories neatly summarized by one of his favorite sayings:

“What happens in Portugal stays in Portugal.”

He has now decided that the annual golf trip is behind him:

“Holiday golf MUST be enjoyable, and when you can’t reach some fairways from the forward tees, it’s time to realise your time has come.”

The tradition continues with four members of the “old brigade” and four newcomers. Dennis has passed the baton, although he admits that when the usual travel date arrives, he will be thinking about them: “In the first week of October I’m sure I will have withdrawal symptoms.”

Giving Back to the Golf Community

As a Lead Moderator for Seniors Who Golf, Dennis supports the moderator team and a worldwide community sharing stories, advice, photos, humor and a love of the game. The role fits a lifetime of service: whether helping at Cullen Links, supporting fellow golfers or sharing good-natured humor, he follows the same principle—if you agree to do something, give it your best.

Keeping History Alive

Golf is not Dennis’s only interest. He is a founding member of the Buckie Thistle Memory Group, connected with Buckie Thistle F.C. in Scotland’s Highland League. The group is building a historical database covering the club from its formation in 1889 to the present.

Members revisit past seasons, notable players, leading scorers, appearance records and other pieces of club history. Guest speakers also join the sessions—“just to break the monotony for members,” Dennis says.

Family, Garden and the Good Life

Dennis and his wife, Gladys, recently celebrated their Diamond Anniversary, marking 60 years of marriage. Their three sons and their families live nearby, and the couple now has seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

As Dennis describes family life, there is plenty of “love, laughter and help when needed—which is becoming more often.”

His horticultural background still shows at home: “My garden now takes up a lot of my pleasure time.”

Still Enjoying the Game

These days, Dennis may not hit the ball as far as he once did. The annual trips have ended, and the colder Scottish months are harder on his hands, but golf has simply evolved with him.

Today, the game is about staying active, enjoying friends and appreciating the chance to keep playing. Through Cullen Links and Seniors Who Golf, he also continues to give back to the people who have made the journey so enjoyable. Sometimes friendship, laughter, coffee and shortbread matter more than the score.
