Driver 10.5°

Callaway Paradym Triple Diamond Driver

Toms switched to the 10.5-degree Callaway Paradym Triple Diamond Driver which was released in February 2023. He currently plays this driver at 11.5° with the +1° adjustable loft option. We are sure this driver will continue to help him find the fairway 70% of the time just as his previous Callaway Mavrik Driver did.

The Callaway Paradym Driver made our list of the best drivers for slower swing speeds in 2023 as the top choice for women and landed a second spot on the list as the best new driver for slower swing speeds

This new driver has a great look in addition to impressive the stability and control. The Triple Diamond version of the Paradym driver is designed for low handicappers. Its low launch and low spin are great for workability. It also features a more compact head size.

PROS

  • Triple diamond version designed for distance and workability
  • Jailbreak system with extra jump off the face
  • Interchangeable weighting system
  • AI designed face
  • Carbon chassis for lightweight feel

CONS

  • The high price can be a turn off for some golfers
  • The wrench to alter the loft and lie is sold separately

David Toms Fairway Wood

3w 15° and 5w 18°

Callaway Epic Flash Fairway Wood

The LSU graduate carries two fairway woods, which form part of the Epic Flash range. His 3-wood is set at 15 degrees, while his 5-wood is 18 degrees. These fairway woods produce sublime ball velocity across the clubface and are easy to launch, which suits seniors.

In my experience, the Callaway Epic Flash fairway woods provide excellent turf interaction for a clean strike from any lie. Finally, the OptiFit hosel allows you to alter the loft and lie.

PROS

  • Lightning ball speed
  • Enlarged sweet spot for increased forgiveness
  • Clean turf interaction
  • Easy launch
  • Adjustable hosel

CONS

  • Some players may find the high launch leads to a loss of control and distance
  • The durability of the clubhead covers is terrible.

3 Hybrid 19°

Srixon ZX Hybrid

Like many professionals, David employs the Srixon ZX 3 hybrid to give him a high-launching, forgiving alternative in his long game.

This hybrid was introduced in 2021 with new Rebound Frame technology that adds a second layer of flex behind the clubface. This technology creates a penetrating ball flight.

In addition, the Srixon ZX hybrid has increased MOI with a low center of gravity which launches the ball easily and is great for golfers that struggle to get the ball of the ground while still providing workability for low handicappers.

PROS

  • High launching and great forgiveness
  • Very clean looking club at address
  • Great shot shaping ability
  • 5 loft options available (16, 19, 22, 25, 28 degrees)

CONS

  • Not adjustable
  • Missing ball alignment markings
  • Less distance than competitor hybrids

Irons 4-9

Srixon ZX7 Mk II

In 2022, Toms ranked 16th on tour for greens in regulation (GIR). He managed to hit the dancefloor over 71% of the time. Srixon irons helped him achieve this feat, thanks to clean turf interaction, high spinning grooves, and the added mass of a cavity.

David switched out his Srixon Z785 irons last season for the new Srixon ZX7 Mk II irons. These are the same irons that Ernie Els also uses.

The Srixon ZX7 MK II Irons offer the look and feel of blades but generate the consistency and forgiveness of a player’s distance irons.

Srixon engineers employed perimeter weighting around the clubface to increase the sweet spot for consistent velocity and spin on all strikes. I particularly appreciate the progressive groove structure, which elevates your spin on mid and short iron shots for drop and stop control.

PROS

  • Higher moment of inertia (MOI) than other blades
  • Buttery soft feel
  • Crisp turf interaction
  • Exceptional playability on approach
  • Superior stability at impact

CONS

  • Less forgiving than game improvement irons
  • The club head is not as compact as most irons

David Toms Wedges

Wedge 50°, 54°, 60°

Cleveland Zipcore RTX6 Tour Rack Wedges

The former PGA Championship title holder excelled around the greens in 2022, ranking 3rd for scrambling and 4th for sand saves. David operates with a three-wedge setup – 50-degree (mid-10), a 54-degree (full 12) and a 60-degree (full 12) wedges.

The Cleveland RTX Zipcore is one of the most accurate wedges in recent years due to its exceptional MOI and durable, maximum spin grooves. The Zipcore technology sends the center of gravity (CG) low and deep to push a higher shot and improve MOI. As a result, it helps you keep your clubface square to the target at impact to keep your short game on line.

Cleveland offers this wedge in 3 sole grinds. The RTX Zipcore range is accessible from a 46 degree pitching wedge to a 62 degree lob wedge.

PROS

  • Promotes straighter shots
  • Available in 3 sole grinds
  • Aggressive grooves for higher spin
  • Increased stability at impact
  • Increased MOI

CONS

  • Slightly chunky profile
  • The high MOI reduces workability

David Toms Putter

Putter

Scotty Cameron GoLo S1

David Toms uses a Scotty Cameron GoLo putter, which features a deep milled face and straight shaft. David knows what he is doing around the green as the PGA Championship winner is 4th on tour for one putts and 7th for overall putting average.

PROS

  • Pure feel on all strokes
  • Generates a clean roll across the turf
  • Superb quality
  • Attractive appearance

CONS

  • Priced at a premium

Golf Ball

Titleist Pro V1 Golf Balls

Closing out David’s bag is his chosen golf ball, the Titleist Pro V1, which delivers low spin and accelerated ball speed in your long game. Conversely, the soft feel cast urethane cover produces robust short-game spin for drop and stop control.

However, the Pro V1 is not an ideal golf ball for the average senior golfer as its higher compression rating and complex structure demand high swing speed. In addition, it carries a premium price which most golfers cannot justify spending.
