Best Golf Irons: Callaway Great Big Bertha Irons Set

Best Lightweight Golf Hybrid/Irons Combo Set: Tour Edge Hot Launch E523 Combo Set

Lightweight golf clubs can be a good solution for slower swing speed senior golfers, and those who feel like distance is becoming an issue in their game. Golfers over the age of 60 tend to need golf clubs that are slightly lighter.

Clubs that are too heavy can cause you to lose distance, struggle with turf interaction, and even start slicing the ball.

I’ll provide you with details on the best lightweight golf clubs on the market and some insider information on how I’ve seen lightweight golf clubs improve the game of a senior player. Most importantly, I’ll show you why you may (or may not) want lightweight golf clubs in your bag.

What is a Lightweight Golf Club?

Colleen Gilbert, senior golfer hitting her tee shot with a lightweight driver on a Florida golf course.

Lightweight golf clubs have a lighter club head and a lighter shaft than a standard golf club. In addition, some lightweight golf clubs, especially those made for the senior golfer, will have a lightweight grip installed.

When it comes to golfers with slower swing speeds or those who have trouble transferring weight through the ball; even just a few grams will make a difference.

If you are wondering whether your current clubs are lightweight this chart will give you some insight.

Best Lightweight Drivers for Seniors

Lightweight Driver

Callaway Paradym Driver

Now that we have gotten through the lightweight complete sets for senior golfers, we will move into the other club categories.

Most of the options we have chosen for drivers, hybrids, fairway woods, etc., also come in a version for the woman golfers.

Remember that a senior flex shaft is a good decision for most senior golfers. Female golfers will use a lightweight women’s shaft, as nothing currently qualifies as a woman’s senior golf shaft.

The Callaway Paradym Driver was a new release to the market in 2023.

Interestingly one of the things that made Callaway bring this club to the market is that it was designed with a Carbon Chasis Triaxial Carbon Crown, considerably more lightweight than other drivers on the market.

You will see the same Jailbreak AI technology that we saw in previous Callaway drivers; however, this model has a 33% lighter club weight. The end result is that golfers are getting much more ball speed.

When we tested the Callaway Paradym, the difference in ball speed was noticeable, thanks to the lightweight design.

  • Higher clubhead speed due to lighter materials
  • Forged titanium face with face cup technology with carbon fiber crown
  • Great looking new design with a square look from the top down

  • Very new to the market, high price tag

Best Lightweight Driver for the Money

Best Value Driver

Cleveland Launcher XL Driver

Cleveland Golf is known for making some of the best golf clubs for senior players.

Cleveland Launcher XL is one of the most forgiving golf drivers that golf equipment manufacturers have brought to the market. It also has a higher launch to help improve total distance.

As great as it is to have forgiveness and accuracy in your driver, seniors need distance as well. The 8-gram weight at the end of the driver grip helps to counterbalance this shaft and give you a bit of an extra jump at impact.

For the first time, Cleveland Golf also included an adjustable hosel so you can fine-tune the loft of your golf club.

  • More energy is transferred to the ball
  • Rebound frame for added flexibility
  • Comes with a lightweight 50-gram shaft
  • Adjustability in the driver’s head

  • Cleveland Launcher XL won’t be the longest-driver choice on the market

Best Lightweight Fairway Woods

Cobra LTDx Max Fairway Woods

As senior golfers’ swing speeds slow down, fairway woods and hybrids take up a bigger portion of the golf bag. These fairway woods and hybrids are light enough to increase total distance and carry. Having the right mix of golf clubs for older players is essential.

The Cobra LTDx Max Fairway Woods features several technologies that help move the ball faster and further down the fairway. One of the most impressive technologies is the 15 HOT zones that are put into the clubface of the Cobra LTDx. The HOT Zones are distributed carefully, and they are all different thicknesses.

When senior golfers contact these lightweight fairway woods, even if the center of the clubface is missed, there will still be plenty of distance.

The shaft choices also include a UST Helium Nanocore graphite, one of the best for golfers looking at lightweight technology.

  • Tons of adjustability in a fairway wood; quality golf clubs for older players
  • Baffler rails provide improved turf interaction
  • Cobra used AI to improve the total distance

  • The club head is rather large, and it takes a bit of time to get used to

Best Lightweight Golf Hybrids

Hybrid for Seniors

Ping G430 Hybrid

From some of the results of early testing, it looks like the Ping G430 hybrid will end up in many senior golfers’ bags this year.

The brand new Ping G430 line has done such a good job combining this lightweight golf club with a premium-feeling clubhead. The lightweight composite crown wraps into the club’s heel, saving quite a bit of weight.

The Ping G430 Hybrid also features a tungsten sole weight to improve the center of gravity without making the hybrid heavier. We were impressed with the overall looks of the club head as it’s sleek looking and highly forgiving out of the rough.

  • Adjustable hosel
  • Brand new to the market with easily customizable shafts
  • Thin face golf club for lighter club weight

  • The price point is a little higher if you are looking to replace more than one hybrid

Best Lightweight Golf Irons for Seniors

Here are two graphite iron sets for you to consider: premium and value-friendly.

Callaway Great Big Bertha Graphite Irons Set

Lightweight irons for seniors have graphite shafts and clubheads that feature alternative materials to decrease total weight. Sometimes when golf clubs get lighter, they also get more expensive.

Most golf clubs are made with a steel face, but Callaway decided in the Great Big Bertha 23 irons to include a titanium face.

We haven’t seen this in a set of irons, and it’s pretty well reflected in the total price of these irons. However, the Great Big Bertha irons have 96 grams less weight in the club head, and that’s a big saving.

In addition to the titanium in the face, Callaway also used 145 grams of tungsten to create a deeper center of gravity and increase launch.

We were impressed with the sound and feel of these Great Big Bertha irons; they certainly show off what those Urethane Microspheres can do.

Best Value Lightweight Iron Combo Set

Tour Edge Hot Launch E523 Combo Set

The Tour Edge Hot Launch E523 golf irons are a much more affordable solution with plenty to offer senior players. The Tour Edge Hot Launch e523 has a hollow body and plenty of clubhead speed.

In addition, the shallow face has lots of offset and slice correction.

This is one of the more forgiving golf irons for seniors, and even though it has a slightly funny look on the bottom, the topline is clean and more compact than previous versions of this club from Tour Edge

Best Lightweight Wedges for Seniors

Best Golf Wedges

Cleveland RTX Zipcore Wedge

Senior golfers need great golf wedges. If you can’t hit the ball quite as far as you used to, a lightweight wedge will ensure you can still get it close to the hole! Wedges on their own are not naturally lightweight; choose something that can be customized and purchased with a graphite shaft

The Cleveland RTX Zipcore is a clean looking golf wedge designed to maximize spin. Spin helps improve overall control and ensure that your shots end up close to the hole. One of the reasons that the Cleveland RTX Zipcore made our list is that it has an impressive feel.

Cleveland used a heat treatment on the wedge grooves to improve overall longevity.

If grooves on your wedge stay in great shape, they don’t need to be replaced as often as other clubs in the bag. You can use a golf club groove cleaner to help you.

What Zipcore does for senior golfers is it makes short game precision simple.

  • Comes in three different sole grinds
  • It can be ordered with a lightweight graphite irons
  • Optimized center of gravity
  • Improved spin rates for more control

  • Not quite as forgiving as a cavity back wedge

Runner Up: Best Lightweight Wedges

Tour Edge Hot Launch E522 Wedges, lightest golf clubs for seniors

The Tour Edge E522 Hot Launch wedges are affordable, come with a lightweight Mitsubishi Fubuki HL graphite shaft, and have a sizeable oversized face. These are truly some of the most lightweight clubs on the market.

Finding wedges that fit your needs can be challenging when searching for the lightest golf clubs for seniors. Wedges need a bit of weight in the club head to ensure they can hit down and through the ball.

With the E522, you still have enough weight in the club head to get out of the rough and sand.

  • Exceptional spin and control
  • Lightweight shaft
  • S from poor lies around the green

  • Only comes in 52, 56, and 60-degree lofts

Best Lightweight Complete Set for Senior Men

Best Complete Set

Cobra Golf Air X Complete Set

Complete sets make buying golf clubs easy. The only problem with complete sets is that you have to be ready to buy everything at once. If you are ready to make that investment, this is the set we recommend.

The Cobra Air X Complete Set is one of the best complete sets for lightweight men’s golf clubs for seniors.

When you purchase the Cobra Golf Air X Complete, you get an offset driver, 3 wood, 4 and 5 hybrid, 6-PW, SW, and a putter. It’s enough clubs for any senior player.  The fairway woods have a carbon fiber crown that provides an enhanced lightweight feel.

Cobra Golf incorporated plenty of forgiveness into the lightweight golf set. The hybrids are incredibly forgiving, allowing for higher launch and better control. Plus, the irons have higher lofts and are high-launching, something most senior golfers will enjoy.

Best Value Lightweight Set for Men

Tour Edge Bazooka 370 Golf Club Set

The Cobra set is our favorite lightweight complete set. However, the Tour Edge Bazooka 370 is quite a bit less expensive and still brings some great value to the market. The Tour Edge Bazooka 370 Senior Full Set comes with a driver, 3 and 5 wood, 4 hybrid, 5-PW, SW, putter, and cart bag.

Tour Edge ensures that their golf clubs are designed for forgiveness. However, after testing these, I’m also impressed with the distance they offer. They put a little extra weight in the heel and toe areas of the driver, and it really gets great speed coming off the face.

The short game tools are good, with a sand wedge and putter included. The putter is a pretty basic blade style putter, but it still has a decent feel. I would recommend this set if you are a mid to high handicap senior and feel like your current clubs are just a bit too heavy for you to succeed on the course.

  • Very fair value
  • Easy-to-use alignment aid
  • Oversized fairway woods are very easy to hit
  • Low center of gravity throughout

  • Doesn’t have the same high launching and long distance technology that Cobra has

There are tons of complete sets for women golfers; the key is to find the one that most closely matches your needs.

The Strata Women’s set is one of the market’s most well-known and highly-sold women’s complete sets. Although this is often considered a beginner’s golf set, there is plenty here for the players that are just looking for lightweight equipment.

With the Strata Women’s Plus, you will get a driver, 5 wood, 5 hybrid, 6-9 iron, a pitching wedge, a sand wedge, and a putter. The driver has an oversized 460c clubhead and plenty of built-in forgiveness.

When we tested the Callaway Strata, we were impressed with the feel the golf clubs had, especially considering they are so budget-friendly.

Understanding the Pros and Cons of Lightweight Golf Clubs

showing two senior golfers using lightweight clubs on the golf tee.

I recently read a write up about lightweight golf clubs not being a good fit for golfers. I found this interesting because, after years of experience, I thought it was pretty well understood that lightweight golf clubs have a place in the world of golf.

Lightweight golf clubs are for golfers who need them!

If you have a lot of speed, compress the ball, and add a lot of lag in your golf swing, lightweight golf clubs will undoubtedly hold you back. Here are a few ways to know if lightweight is what you need, or maybe just a change in the flex of the shaft.

The driver is a pretty lightweight club, to begin with. The problem that some seniors deal with is not necessarily the weight of the club but the length and the flex combined. If you still hit the ball over 220 yards, lightweight isn’t really necessary.

Instead, look for a shaft that matches your swing speed. If you are currently playing a stiff shafted driver, it may be time to go down to a regular.

Driver shafts can be as lightweight as 45 grams at a time, but if they get too light, you may hit them high and not get enough roll on your shots. The bottom line here is that flex is something to look into before you get stuck on the idea that you need lightweight.

Fairways & Hybrids

Fairway woods and hybrids become rescue clubs for senior golfers. When you miss one off the tee or end up in the rough, the fairway and hybrid are there to get you out.

In order to cut through the rough, you need a little weight in the head of the fairway wood and driver.

In this situation, look for a lightweight shaft, but be careful switching to a lightweight clubhead unless your swing speed has really started to slow down.

Golf irons for retirees are typically more lightweight than golf irons for younger golfers simply because senior iron shafts are graphite. Graphite shafts can help you get a little of your speed back, hit those more penetrating shots again, and compress the golf ball.

Be careful with heavy golf shafts in your longer irons, as it becomes really hard to get these up off the ground. In addition, you will start to notice your 6 iron doesn’t go any further than your 5 iron, etc.

A golf iron fitting is important for senior golfers who have noticed a change in their club head speed.

For your pitching wedge, don’t be afraid to make sure it’s lightweight and that you can get your full yardage with the club. However, when you switch to the sand and lob wedge, the full swing shots are not as much of a concern.

I don’t know about you, but I like to know where the clubhead is when hitting a wedge. It should have a little extra weight to it to keep the club down and cut through the grass.

Thin wedge shots never work out all that well. Don’t forget if your wedges feel a little lightweight; you can always throw a piece of lead tape on the bottom.

The putter weight you choose has nothing to do with being a senior golfer or a junior golfer. Instead, choose a putter weight based on the green speeds you play and the feel you like.

Fast greens do better with a heavier putter. It’s easier to control the putter and keep it on the right path.

Slow greens are easier to navigate with a lighter putter, so you can take a bit of a bigger stroke and get the ball to the hole.

Don’t let anyone sell you on a “lightweight” senior putter. Instead, find one that works specifically for your game.

Heavy vs Light Golf Clubs: Which is Best for You on the golf course?

Now that you have a rundown of the best lightweight clubs for seniors in 2024, you may wonder why seniors need these lightweight clubheads and lightweight golf shafts. There is no question that for the slower swinging senior golfers, a heavy golf club is a problem; here are some reasons.

Total Distance & Clubhead Speed

Lightweight golf clubs for seniors are easier to swing faster. When you get that extra clubhead speed, expect it to come along with some extra distance as well. Senior golfers often lose a bit of speed because of their age, so the increasing total distance is a positive.

Golf Swing Consistency

You will get tired when you are swinging with a heavy golf club. Some senior golfers may find they are great on the front nine and then start to lose their game a bit on the back. This is normal, and sometimes it happens because the golf clubs are too heavy to sustain throughout the entire round.

When comparing heavy golf club performance with lightweight golf club performance in the average golfer, the lightweight golf shafts tend to produce straighter shots.

If your clubs are too heavy, the tendency is to hit shots that end up right of the target. Remember that senior golfers must consider lightweight golf shafts in addition to lightweight clubheads. Don’t feel bad about switching to lighter golf clubs; golf technology is out there, and it’s worth taking advantage of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are a few most commonly asked questions about the best lightweight golf clubs for seniors.

Is a lighter golf club better?

A lighter golf club is always better for golfers with a slower swing speed. Lighter golf clubs can help promote higher speeds and give golfers extra distance they didn’t even know they could on the golf course.

Are lighter golf clubs better for seniors?

Senior golfers often lose a bit of the speed in their golf swing as they age. The lightweight golf clubs can bring some of that back. Think about the difference between swinging a large ax versus swinging a lightweight dowel; you can swing the dowel considerably faster.

What are the lightest golf irons for seniors?

Some of the lightweight golf irons for seniors are the new Callaway Big Bertha 23 irons. This clubhead features a titanium face and plenty of tungsten, materials that save a good amount of weight.

Does the weight of a golf club matter?

The golf club’s weight and the golf shaft’s flex are two significant factors in the fitting. If one of the other is not correct, expect great inconsistency in your golf game.

What happens if golf irons are too light?

If golf irons are too light, you may notice that the ball flight gets too high, you are more inconsistent, the golf ball can travel left of the target, and you may not get as much distance as you can.

Do lighter clubs swing faster?

It is easier to swing a lighter club faster. This is why so many senior golfers switch to a lightweight golf club. Some golfers will max out on speed, and they find that a heavier club combined with their high speed is actually best, but it takes quite a bit of speed to get to this point.

Final Thoughts

We hope this review of the best lightweight golf clubs for seniors in 2024 has helped you narrow down some of the choices out there.

Dozens of new golf clubs come to market every year and are often designed to help senior golfers. If your swing is slowing down and a little more power would help you improve, a lightweight golf club is the way to go.
